EDU-M 712A: Mentoring: Preparing for a Literature Review I

Overview

In this first course in a four-course sequence (EDUM712A,712B, 720A, and 720B), you will be introduced to what is involved in a review of the literature, review research terminology, and how to ascertain sources relevant to your own topic. You will set a strategy and begin to find resources, reporting progress to your professor and community of scholars as to how the process is going and the sources you discovered to date.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the components of a literature review, as well as the purposes of a literature review in doctoral study.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of a literature review plan by developing a literature plan for doctoral dissertations.
  • Conduct disciplined searches in locating peer-reviewed resources for review, using limiters and other techniques to maximize results.
  • Critically review resources for inclusion in a doctoral dissertation literature review.
  • Recognize and apply an understanding of research terminology in reviewing research documents.
  • Review and practice motivational techniques in order to stay directed in quests for high-quality literature reviews that will withstand the scrutiny of a dissertation committee.
